In 2021, the coronavirus pandemic is still a major human problem. New strains appear, people continue to get sick. The state takes measures to protect citizens. One of these measures was universal vaccination against Covid-19.
The impact of the coronavirus on the systems and organs of the human body has not yet been fully studied. Scientists and medics, of course, put forward various theories, but it will take years of study to confirm them.
The same is true for the vaccine.
Our patients ask a lot of questions related to dental treatment during the pandemic: whether it is possible to come to the clinic with mild symptoms of acute respiratory viral infections, whether it is possible to start implantation after vaccination against covid-19, how the coronavirus will affect rehabilitation after dental surgeries, and much more.
In this article, with the help of an experienced implant surgeon of our clinic, Nesterenko Alexey Pavlovich, we will try to provide answers to several popular questions. Be warned: the conclusions are based on the general theory of medicine and the annual practice of our specialists. To make a decision on the start of treatment specifically in your case should doctor after a face-to-face consultation and diagnosis.
→ Can I come to the clinic with minor symptoms of acute respiratory infections?
No, we kindly ask you to postpone your appointment until the diagnosis is clarified. New strains of coronavirus can “masquerade” as a common cold. Be responsible and take care of those around you who may be severely ill.
→ Do I need a QR code or PCR for a clinic visit?
At the moment there are no such requirements, follow the information on our website.
→ Is it safe to visit the clinic now, or is it better to postpone treatment for the time being?
We comply with all regulations of the Ministry of Health on patient safety in the clinic: temperature control, questioning about contact with sick people, ultraviolet disinfection lamps, disposable masks and gloves for each patient, strict control of doctors and medical staff. All our employees have undergone mandatory vaccination with Sputnik V. We care about the protection of patients and ask you to be careful and vigilant.
→ Can I have implants if I have had coronavirus?
Yes, you can. But taking into account the specificity of the disease and its influence on the organism in its moderate and severe course – before starting dental treatment, especially for patients with chronic diseases (diabetes mellitus, oncology, heart and vascular pathologies), it is recommended to get conclusions from allied specialists.
→ Is it possible to treat teeth during vaccination?
For 2 weeks before vaccination it is advisable to postpone planned surgical operations (sinus elevator, bone grafting, implantation), it is also recommended not to hurry with treatment after vaccination and also wait about 2 weeks. This is due to the fact that the body receives immune load during vaccination, during this period it is desirable not to give additional load in the form of surgical interventions.
The exception, of course, is acute toothache and unscheduled procedures for emergency indications.
→ Will treatment for coronavirus not affect implant engraftment?
In general, no. No tendency toward implant rejection was detected in patients who had survived the coronavirus during one year of follow-up.
There is one nuance – it is undesirable to start implantation immediately after recovery if you took anticoagulants (blood thinners) during the treatment period. This may affect the engraftment of structures in the soft tissues, there is a risk of bleeding.
→ Can a tooth be extracted before/after vaccination or a covida? What should you do if you need an urgent tooth extraction and an immunizationat the same time ?
All routine extractions are performed either one week before the 1st component of the vaccine or 2 weeks after the 2nd component is administered. This applies to any planned surgical procedure, whether it is an extraction, bone grafting or implantation. If it is necessary to remove a tooth due to acute pain, in order not to cause further complications, an exception is made – the cause tooth is removed at any stage of vaccination (between the two components, or a few days before and after).
→ Is it possible to obtain a medical exemption from vaccination if, for example, a wisdom tooth is extracted or if dental implant surgery is performed?
The dental clinic cannot grant a medical exemption from vaccination. However, they can provide a document proving that a particular intervention has been performed, such as a tooth extraction or elective surgery. You should see your general practitioner with this document before the first component of the COVID-19 vaccine is administered. If the GP thinks it is necessary, he or she will give you a medical excuse after you have had surgery.
→ Does treatment with anesthesia affect vaccination, can it be given after the use of anesthetics? Can anesthesia be given on the same day as theCOVID-19 vaccination?
There is no evidence in medical practice yet to prove that anesthesia adversely affects the administration of vaccinations. As for anesthesia immediately after vaccination, it is advisable to refrain from using anesthetics for at least a couple of days. If it is an acute pain, then the use of anesthesia is justified, and the surgeon or therapist uses it, while carefully monitoring the patient’s condition.
→ Can I get a coronavirus vaccination for periodontitis?
Yes, you can, periodontitis is not a contraindication to vaccination.
→ If my teethhurt, can I get the covida vaccination?
If your teeth hurt, you should go to a dental clinic to eliminate the cause of the pain. The dentist will issue a document that a certain intervention (treatment, depulpation, extraction, etc.) has been carried out, and with this document you can go to the therapist before the first component of the vaccine. If the general practitioner considers it necessary to refuse the vaccination for a certain period of time, it is advisable to postpone the vaccination.
